Twitter buff. The Fisher-Price PXL-2000 was a black-and-white camcorder that used a normal audio cassette as its recording medium. Video was recorded on the left audio channel and audio on the appropriate channel. To beat the bandwidth limitations of the medium, the machine sped up the motion of the tape by practically 9x that of a normal cassette playback (the sooner the tape velocity, the extra knowledge may be learn / written per second). There’s a purpose VHS tapes used a lot bigger strips of magnetic tape, in spite of everything. Even with the velocity benefit, the standard was very poor and the machine was solely in manufacturing for about one 12 months earlier than being discontinued. Nonetheless, it demonstrated that it was attainable to document video on a normal audio cassette and that’s ...

Workshop focus: What you need to know when buying a compressor

After the sledge, vice and vise-grip, an air compressor is of the most regularly used tools in the agricultural workshop – yet it is often overlooked. Typically day-to-day jobs include inflating tyres, blowing down machinery or operating pneumatic tools – like (air) impact wrenches or paint-spraying equipment. A typical on-farm compressor will be driven by a tractor’s PTO, an electric motor or an engine. A crankshaft is connected to one or more pistons; these ‘pump’ air from the atmosphere through valves into a tank, where it is stored under pressure. Drive from the power source can be either direct or via a belt(s). Single-cylinder designs are the most cost-effective; twin-cylinder versions tend to be quieter and smoother. Twin-cylinder compound models (where one cylinder feeds the next) tend to be more efficient, producing more air and/or higher pressure for the same power consumption. Single-phase (electrical) power supplies can limit potential compressor size but, if power supply is an issue, some manufacturers offer twin-motor, twin-pump units. In this configuration one motor starts – then, after a few seconds, the second motor kicks in. This helps to reduce start-up curren...

One-Light Photography Tutorial: How to Shoot Reflective Products

Product photographer Dustin Dolby is back with another workphlo tutorial that tackles a difficult subject in simple terms: how to shoot reflective products using only a single light source. As with all of Dolby’s tutorials, he’s really giving a master class in simple lighting control—helping viewers to understand how to manipulate one light and stack multiple exposures to achieve a professional product photo. In this case, he’s sharing his workflow for shooting reflective products, which can be especially tricky. “Reflective products in general present a unique obstacle, and with cutlery you can make use of a convenient approach. By extrapolating the angle our camera looks at our subject, we can place a corresponding light behind our scene,” explains Dolby. “This will flatter both a reflective subject and surface simultaneously creating a convenient angle to capture reflective product photography like knives forks and spoons and silverware.” And this is the result he’s able to achieve by stacking just two images together—one lit from above, another from the side to provide a highlight and give the cutlery depth: The tutorial comes at the perfect time, when many photographers are...

Many skin-care products and other cosmetics claiming to be natural, organic, green or some combination thereof

Many skin-care products and other cosmetics claiming to be natural, organic, green or some combination thereof have come and gone on store shelves and websites without leaving much of a mark. But it wasn’t until products started calling themselves “clean” that a critical mass of customers started poring over ingredient lists with the diligence of parents checking their children’s hair for lice. The result has been a revolution that is reshaping the beauty industry. But why has the clean label — for which there is no regulatory definition — so captured the public’s devotion? Why are dermatologists so disdainful of the concept? And what does it mean? The term popped up in the 1970s with CoverGirl’s “Clean Make-up” campaign, a reference to the fresh-faced, no-makeup look. Fast forward to the 2000s, and the word took on new meaning with the launch of skin-care lines such as the British brand Ren — the Swedish word for clean. Ren was inspired by the wife of the co-founder, who suffered skin irritation from conventional products while pregnant and disliked the all-natural alternatives because of their undesirable texture and lackluster performance. The line was created to be “clean of...

How to hang a ‘floating’ wall sink with no visible support

Q: I need your help solving a perplexing conundrum. I love all things old and have purchased a salvaged antique marble stone corner sink that I want to use as a powder-room lavatory. It already has a drain hole, so that’s not the issue. The faucet needs to be in the wall, and I can handle that as well. My problem is I want the sink to appear as if it’s floating in the air with no visible means of support. The sink is really heavy, as it weighs close to 70 pounds. What can be done to achieve my goal, and what other tips do you have to make sure this goes well? Are there any hidden problems you might know of I need to avoid? — Sharon F., Key Largo, Fla. A: Years ago I used to purchase quite a few salvaged building materials for some of my projects. I was so lucky to have a specialty business near me that foraged for one-of-a-kind building fixtures, doors, mantles, sinks and so forth in buildings slated for demolition. They had so many things you simply couldn’t believe it. One day I found a stunning solid walnut fireplace mantle I incorporated into the last home I built for my family. Installing an antique sink shouldn’t be a problem at all. When deciding to purchase one, you usu...

Sourness is the result of high amounts of acid in foods. Citrus fruits, for example, have

Sourness is the result of high amounts of acid in foods. Citrus fruits, for example, have high amounts of citric acid, giving them their characteristic lip-puckering flavor (1, 2). However, unlike the other five tastes, researchers still don’t completely understand the mechanism behind how sour taste receptors work or why some acids result in a stronger sour flavor than others (1, 2, 3, 4). As is the case with bitterness, the detection of sour is thought to be important for survival. It can help identify foods that could be dangerous to consume, as rotten or spoiled foods often have a sour flavor due to the growth of bacteria (5, 6). In fact, many sour foods are quite nutritious and rich in plant compounds called antioxidants, which help protect your cells from damage (7, 8). While they all have a hint of sourness, the balance of sweet and sour varies greatly between different types. Citrus fruits contain a high concentration of citric acid — a naturally occurring compound found in a variety of fruits that imparts a tart, sour flavor (9). In addition to being the best natural sources of citric acid, these fruits are known for being high in vitamin C, which is essential for a st...
